Travel enthusiasts seeking a unique heritage experience this spring should set their sights on the North York Moors, where the iconic steam locomotive No. 45596 Bahamas will be making its debut appearance on one of Britain’s most scenic railway journeys.
For eight days in April (5-8 and 10-13), visitors can embark on a nostalgic journey through the stunning North York Moors National Park aboard trains hauled by this magnificent example of British engineering heritage. The special event marks the first time this celebrated locomotive will operate on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s 24-mile route between the market town of Pickering and the moorland village of Grosmont.
The Jubilee Class locomotive, built in 1934 and named after the Caribbean islands, offers travelers a chance to step back into the golden age of rail travel while enjoying breathtaking landscapes that change with the seasons. Early April visits may be rewarded with the first signs of spring across the moorland, creating a perfect backdrop for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
“Seeing Bahamas in steam, through the stunning North York Moors, will be a sight to behold,” said Paul Middleton from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. “We look forward to sharing this piece of living history with enthusiasts and families alike.”
The journey itself offers flexibility for travelers, with the ability to hop on and off at the railway’s charming heritage stations throughout the day. Visitors can explore the 1930s-themed station at Pickering, visit the village of Goathland (known to many as “Hogsmeade” from the Harry Potter films), or browse the railway memorabilia at Grosmont’s Shed Shop.
Each station along the route offers its own unique character and facilities, with tea rooms at Pickering, Goathland, and Grosmont providing refreshments throughout the day. The route travels through diverse landscapes, from forested valleys to wide-open moorland vistas, offering a continuously changing panorama outside your window.
This special event adds an extra dimension to North Yorkshire’s already rich offering of spring travel experiences. Visitors could combine their railway journey with exploration of nearby attractions such as the ancient woodlands of Cropton Forest, the historic market town of Helmsley, or the dramatic ruins of Rievaulx Abbey.
Standard tickets for this unique travel experience start from £49.50 for adults, with a 10% discount available for online bookings made more than four days in advance. Family tickets and group discounts make this an affordable heritage experience for all.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway recommends booking in advance to secure preferred travel dates for this special visitor, which is expected to attract railway enthusiasts from across the country.
