The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has unveiled an ambitious program of events for 2025, joining national celebrations marking two centuries of British rail history. The heritage line will open its main season on March 31st with visits from legendary locomotives and special events throughout the year.
Among the highlights, the celebrated No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, famous for its record-breaking 112 mph run in 1959, will return to the line in March. April will see the first-ever visit of No. 45596 Bahamas, a pivotal locomotive in Britain’s ‘Return to Steam’ movement.
The railway has revised its operating schedule for 2025, running five days a week during off-peak seasons and daily service during peak periods including Easter and summer holidays. Popular events returning include the Annual Diesel Gala in June and the Steam Gala in September, alongside seasonal attractions like ghost trains and Santa Specials.
For the year ahead, the NYMR has crafted a schedule of events for visitors of all ages, ensuring an exciting year for rail enthusiasts and families alike.

“2025 is set to be a momentous year for the NYMR as we join the nation in celebrating Railway 200,” says Laura Strangeway, CEO of the NYMR. “Our dedicated team has worked tirelessly to bring together an exciting calendar of events.”
The heritage line is introducing new pricing incentives, offering 10% discounts for advance online bookings and free travel for two children with family tickets. As a registered charity that received £400,000 in Gift Aid donations last year, the railway is also offering visitors who make optional donations a 15% voucher for use in station tearooms and gift shops.
The program combines historical significance with family entertainment, from Easter challenges to Heritage Open Days, reflecting the railway’s role in preserving and celebrating Britain’s rich railway heritage. The line, running through the North Yorkshire Moors, continues to be one of Britain’s most popular heritage railways, attracting enthusiasts and families alike.
