All aboard! Thomas the Tank Engine is steaming into North Yorkshire this May, and he’s bringing the party with him.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway will host Day Out With Thomas: Let’s Rock, Let’s Roll Tour from 23rd-27th and 29th-31st May 2026, offering families the chance to ride behind everyone’s favourite blue engine on one of Britain’s most scenic heritage railways.
This isn’t just a train ride—it’s a full day of Thomas-themed fun. The event includes live entertainment from the Sodor Station Sweepers Rusty & Dusty, meet-and-greet opportunities with Sir Topham Hatt (the Fat Controller to those of us of a certain vintage), garden games, arts and crafts, storytelling sessions, and an exclusive Thomas & Friends character hunt around the site. Every child receives a Thomas & Friends giveaway, and there’s a gift shop for those who want to take home something extra.
The centrepiece, of course, is the train ride itself—a journey behind Thomas, a real working steam engine, through the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors. It’s the kind of experience that creates lasting memories for children and brings a nostalgic smile to parents and grandparents who grew up with the stories of Sodor.
Additional activities include a Thomas & Friends music corner, a play pod with toys and crafts, a tattoo station, photo opportunities, the chance to make your own musical whistle, unlimited turns on the fairground ride, railway-themed fete games, and a remote-control Thomas maze. While enjoying the entertainment at the station, visitors can also hop aboard the NER Autocar for an hour-long scenic ride from Pickering to Levisham and back—no booking required, though seating is limited.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is Britain’s most popular heritage railway, attracting around a quarter of a million passengers each year. The line runs through stunning moorland scenery from Pickering to Grosmont, with connections over Network Rail to the seaside town of Whitby. It’s a fully accredited museum and educational charitable trust, committed to preserving its historic railway while delivering an authentic evocation of the steam age.
Day Out With Thomas events take place at heritage railways across the UK, but few can match the dramatic landscape of the North Yorkshire Moors as a backdrop. For families looking to combine Thomas fun with a broader day out, the area offers plenty to explore—from the market town of Pickering to the fishing port of Whitby and the wild beauty of the moors themselves.
Advanced booking is required, with on-the-gate sales subject to availability. Given the event’s popularity, booking early is strongly recommended.
