Four UK automotive apprentices will have the opportunity to drive in the prestigious London to Brighton Veteran Car Run this November, thanks to a new initiative launched by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and the British Motor Museum during National Apprenticeship Week.

The winners will pilot a historic 1904 Thornycroft 20hp tourer along the 60-mile route from London’s St James’s Park to Brighton seafront. The vehicle, which achieved multiple first-place finishes in the Run before World War II, represents a pivotal moment in early automotive history.

“This partnership creates a unique opportunity for apprentices to participate in one of the world’s most prestigious and exhilarating motoring events,” says Stephen Laing, Head of Collections & Engagement at the British Motor Museum. “Today’s apprentices will be the pioneers in the 21st century’s rapidly changing motor industry, developing the transport of the future.”

The competition comes at a time when apprenticeships are playing an increasingly vital role in the UK’s automotive sector. Currently, over 4,500 apprentices are training in the industry, with more than 550 having started their programs this academic year alone.

SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes emphasizes the historical continuity: “Apprentices have helped drive automotive change for more than a century, bringing new skills, perspectives and ideas. We are proud to partner with the British Motor Museum in this world famous event to highlight the incredible opportunities available to young people.”

The prize package includes driver training at the Museum, an overnight stay in London, dinner with the British Motor Museum team, and participation in the November 2 event. Eligible apprentices must submit a 250-word response explaining what participating in the Run would mean to them by April 30, 2025.

The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, the world’s longest-running motoring event, traditionally features hundreds of veteran cars making the journey to the south coast. Places in the Run are highly coveted, making this opportunity particularly special for young automotive professionals.
