Rail enthusiasts and history lovers are in for a treat this spring as one of the most magnificent survivors of Britain’s steam age returns to service. The A4 Pacific locomotive No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley will grace the rails of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in March 2025, offering visitors a rare chance to experience the golden age of steam travel.

The locomotive, a sister engine to the famous Mallard which still holds the world speed record for steam traction, represents the pinnacle of British steam engineering. Built in 1937 as the 100th Gresley Pacific locomotive, it was named after its designer, the innovative railway engineer Sir Nigel Gresley, whose streamlined A4s revolutionized high-speed rail travel in the 1930s.

The visit comes as part of the railway’s contribution to Railway 200, the nationwide celebration marking two centuries since the birth of Britain’s modern railway network. “Having an A4 Pacific back on our line is particularly special,” explains Nick Simpson, NYMR’s Head of Mechanical Engineering. “These locomotives represent the absolute peak of British steam technology – they’re the Spitfires of the railway world.”

Visitors can experience this engineering marvel on eight specially scheduled days between March 22-30, 2025. Each day will see two return journeys between Pickering and Grosmont, offering passengers the chance to travel behind one of only six surviving A4 Pacifics. The route, which winds through the North Yorkshire countryside, provides the perfect setting to appreciate the power and elegance of these machines.

What makes this visit particularly noteworthy is the locomotive’s remarkable preservation. After serving on the East Coast Main Line, primarily from London King’s Cross, Sir Nigel Gresley survived the mass scrapping of steam locomotives in the 1960s and has been carefully maintained to operate on heritage railways. Its streamlined design, characteristic of the A4 class, remains as striking today as it was when first introduced.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which carries 300,000 passengers annually, has established itself as one of Britain’s premier heritage railways. This special event continues their tradition of bringing significant historic locomotives to their scenic 18-mile route through the North York Moors National Park.

Tickets for these special services start at £30 for adults and £15 for children, with discounts available for railway members. Early booking is advised as these runs featuring such prestigious locomotives typically sell out quickly.

For railway enthusiasts, photographers, families, or anyone interested in experiencing a genuine piece of British engineering heritage, this offers a rare opportunity to see one of the most elegant locomotives ever built in action on one of Britain’s most picturesque heritage railways.
