The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is bringing back its beloved Whitby Winter Excursions this holiday season, offering daily heritage steam journeys through the frosty Yorkshire moorland from December 27th through January 4th.

The nostalgic winter service will run every day during the post-Christmas period, departing Pickering at 9:35am and arriving in the historic seaside town of Whitby at 11:15am. The return journey departs Whitby at 2:10pm, giving visitors nearly two hours to explore the town’s atmospheric harbour, cobbled streets, and seasonal charm before heading back through the winter landscape.

The 36-mile round trip takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes in each direction, traveling through breathtaking moorland scenery from the comfort of heritage carriages pulled by steam locomotives. Passengers can expect views of snow-dusted hills and the timeless beauty of Britain’s steam railway heritage.

Tickets are priced at £49.50 for adults and £12.15 for children, with discounted rates available for NYMR members.

Railway 200 Celebration Continues

To cap off the Railway 200 celebrations marking the bicentenary of Britain’s modern railway system, the NYMR is also welcoming back the beautifully restored North Eastern Railway Electric Autocar No. 3170. The diesel-powered heritage vehicle, courtesy of the NER 1903 Electric Autocar Trust, will run hop-on, hop-off services between Pickering, Levisham, Goathland, and Grosmont stations.

Day Rover tickets for the NER Autocar service are £25.00 for adults and £12.50 for children, with single Rail Trail tickets also available.

Laura Strangeway, CEO at the NYMR, said the winter excursions have become a seasonal highlight: “The Whitby Winter Excursions are perfect for post-Christmas adventures to create cherished memories. They are an ideal way for passengers to experience the charm of steam travel at that time of year.”

The Station Tea Room at Pickering will be open throughout the service period, serving bacon rolls, hot drinks, and refreshments. An on-board Buffet Carriage will also be available on each Whitby Winter Excursion service.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of Britain’s most popular heritage railways, attracting around 250,000 passengers annually. The charitable trust operates a heritage service from Pickering to Grosmont and runs over Network Rail tracks from Grosmont to Whitby.
