UK’s largest butterfly farm invites visitors to share memories as it celebrates four decades of wonder

Stratford-upon-Avon’s beloved Butterfly Farm is preparing to celebrate a major milestone this summer as it marks its 40th anniversary in July. What began as one man’s ambitious vision has grown into the UK’s largest and most successful butterfly farm, welcoming over 5 million visitors since opening its doors in 1985.

The attraction was the brainchild of Clive Farrell, who dreamed of creating a unique destination that would introduce visitors to the wonder of butterflies. Four decades later, his vision has not only been realized but has flourished, with hundreds of thousands of school children having experienced the magic of walking among stunning tropical butterflies in the farm’s live displays.

Anniversary Events Throughout Summer

To commemorate this significant milestone, the Butterfly Farm has organized a series of special activities running throughout the summer months. The celebrations will officially begin with an anniversary event hosted by founder Clive Farrell on Friday, July 18, featuring invited guests.

From July 19 through September 1, visitors can enjoy an enhanced experience with competitions, educational demonstrations covering the butterfly life cycle, mini-beast encounters, beetle mania sessions, and pupae demonstrations. The summer will also see the launch of an exciting new exhibition within the popular ‘Rainforest Realm’ section.

“As we reflect on four incredible decades, we are grateful for the countless visitors, staff, volunteers, work experience students and supporters who have helped us reach this moment,” said Richard Lamb, General Manager at Stratford Butterfly Farm. “Whether you’re a lifelong supporter or planning your first visit, we would love you to join us over the summer holidays in celebrating this special year.”

Calling for Visitor Memories

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Butterfly Farm is reaching out to the community to share their memories and photographs from visits over the years. Whether documenting a family day out, a memorable school trip, or a magical butterfly encounter, the farm wants to hear visitors’ stories.

The public is encouraged to share photos and memories using the hashtag #stratfordbutterflyfarm40th and tagging the location as Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm, or by emailing submissions to marketing@butterflyfarm.co.uk. The best stories and images will be featured on the farm’s website and social media channels, with winners receiving complimentary tickets for a return visit.

A Growing Legacy

What started in 1985 as Clive Farrell’s bold vision to bring the beauty and magic of tropical butterflies to Warwickshire has evolved into one of the UK’s most beloved nature attractions. The success of the venture speaks to the enduring appeal of connecting people with the natural world through immersive, educational experiences.

“Come and experience the magic, walk among the butterflies, and help us continue our mission of inspiration, conservation and education,” Lamb added, emphasizing the farm’s ongoing commitment to its founding principles.

Visitor Information

The Stratford Butterfly Farm continues to operate year-round, open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM (last entry at 5:30 PM), closing only on Christmas Day. The attraction houses hundreds of spectacular butterflies alongside insects, reptiles, and spiders, providing visitors with a comprehensive look at the diverse world of tropical wildlife.
