Classic steam rail travel is making a grand return to the Chiltern Hills in 2025 with The Steam Dreams Rail Co. launching exclusive journeys aboard a historic locomotive. The newly announced “Spirit of Summer” tours will offer passengers a chance to step back in time while traversing one of England’s most scenic landscapes.
The vintage excursions will depart from London Paddington on two dates only – July 10 and August 21, 2025 – with both daytime and evening options available. Passengers will board carriages pulled by the celebrated 70000 Britannia steam locomotive, which carries the distinguished honor of having previously hauled the Royal Train.
These circular routes will take travelers through the Thames Valley toward Oxford before turning through the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where passengers can admire rolling chalk landscapes, ancient woodlands, and picturesque vineyards from the comfort of elegantly appointed carriages.
“Our passengers cherish the nostalgic experience of travelling by steam train,” explains Juliet Soley from Steam Dreams. “Coupled with the luxurious interiors that evoke a bygone era, the locally sourced menus, and the stunning scenery, it makes for a magical day or evening out that leaves a truly lasting impression.”
The company offers two distinct travel experiences. The premium Pullman Dining option immerses guests in the golden age of rail travel with plush armchair seating at tables adorned with white linens, fine china, fresh flowers, and seasonal cuisine. This experience costs £235 ($300) per person for the lunchtime journey and £195 ($250) for the evening excursion.
For those seeking a more casual but still refined experience, First Class accommodations provide spacious seating with large picture windows at £145 ($185) for the daytime tour and £100 ($128) for the evening journey. Passengers can bring their own refreshments or add afternoon tea for an additional £26 ($33).
The daytime “Spirit of Summer” tour operates from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM, while the “Sunset Steam Express” runs from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM, allowing guests to enjoy the countryside bathed in the golden light of evening.
Steam Dreams has been operating heritage rail journeys for over 25 years and became the first carbon-neutral rail charter a decade ago. Following its 2022 acquisition by Locomotive Services Group, the company has expanded its fleet of vintage locomotives and carriages.
This new Chiltern Hills route joins the company’s portfolio of destinations throughout the UK, continuing their tradition of blending rail nostalgia with luxury travel experiences.
Bookings for these exclusive journeys can be made through the Steam Dreams website or by telephone.
