The new trail offers 40 fun activities along the historic railway line as part of national Railway 200 celebrations

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has unveiled an exciting new initiative this spring with the launch of the 200 Trail, designed to commemorate the bicentennial of modern railways in the UK.

The trail, which forms a key part of the national Railway 200 celebrations, invites visitors to explore the picturesque heritage railway while completing various challenges along the route. The initiative aims to attract families, railway enthusiasts, and adventure seekers to experience the historic line in a new and interactive way.

Participants can download a checklist from the NYMR website featuring 40 engaging activities, including finding historic station clocks, getting tickets clipped by inspectors, sitting in a goods wagon at Goathland Tea Room, and counting steps through the famous Grosmont tunnel.

“The 200 Trail is a fantastic way to celebrate the legacy of the railway while offering a fun and interactive experience for visitors of all ages,” said Corina Inverno, Head of Marketing at NYMR. “Whether you’re travelling one mile or 200, there’s something for everyone to discover as part of Railway 200.”

The initiative also features a special 200 Mile Challenge, allowing visitors to track their journeys between historic stations while immersing themselves in the region’s rich railway heritage. A downloadable guide helps participants log their travels along the line from Pickering to Whitby.

In partnership with Visit Pickering, the railway has also created The Pickering Pixie Trail, a free digital activity that encourages families to explore the town and meet virtual pixies. This trail launches on Saturday, March 29th, with events and activities running from 10am until 3pm.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which carries approximately 300,000 passengers annually, is Britain’s most popular heritage railway and one of the top visitor attractions in the North East. As an Educational Charitable Trust and fully accredited museum, the NYMR is dedicated to preserving and showcasing Britain’s railway history.

The 200 Trail will be available throughout spring, offering visitors a chance to experience the beauty of the North York Moors while participating in the nationwide celebration of Britain’s railway heritage.
