Blenheim Palace is opening five previously private rooms to the public in a significant expansion of its visitor experience. The UNESCO World Heritage Site’s new “Family Treasures” tour, launching February 15, offers unprecedented access to some of the palace’s most intimate spaces and valuable collections.

The extended route takes visitors through the Duke’s Bar, Family Dining Room, Smoking Room, and Duchess’s Sitting Room, culminating in the spectacular Grand Cabinet – the palace’s most opulent room typically reserved for special family occasions. This grand space holds particular historical significance, having served as a schoolroom during World War II for Lady Rosemary Spencer-Churchill, who later became one of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation Maids of Honour in 1953.

Among the remarkable artifacts now on display are the Savonnerie Carpet from 1750, tapestries depicting the life of Alexander the Great purchased by the 1st Duke, and a chamber pot reportedly owned by Marie Antoinette. Art enthusiasts will appreciate works by Sir Winston Churchill and portraits of the 9th Duke’s wives by Giovanni Boldini and Ambrose McEvoy.

The tour expansion is part of a larger initiative at Blenheim Palace this year. Spring will see the opening of a Roof Top View platform offering panoramic views of the estate and Column of Victory, alongside a new “Life Below Stairs” experience showcasing the original Palace kitchens. However, both these attractions will be available for a limited time due to an upcoming £12 million roof restoration project.

This extensive renovation holds particular significance as it mirrors the palace’s initial opening to the public 75 years ago, which was also prompted by the need for roof repairs. The current project aims to preserve the historic structure for future generations.

The new Family Treasures tour, adding 20 minutes to the visitor experience, is accessible to anyone with a valid Blenheim Palace Annual Pass or day ticket. The route follows paths once walked by royalty and distinguished guests, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the private life of one of Britain’s most celebrated historic homes.
