The highly anticipated historical drama Mrs President is now captivating audiences at Charing Cross Theatre, and newly released production images offer a glimpse into this gripping exploration of Mary Lincoln’s life and legacy. Directed by Bronagh Lagan (Cruise, Flowers for Mrs Harris), the play stars Miriam Grace Edwards (One of the Boys, Romeo & Juliet) as Mary Lincoln, alongside Sam Jenkins-Shaw (The King and I, Twelfth Night) as Matthew Brady, the famed 19th-century photographer. The production runs until 16 March 2025.

A Compelling Story of Power, Identity, and Betrayal

Written by John Ransom Phillips, Mrs President takes a deeply personal look at Mary Lincoln, a woman battling grief, political enemies, and the judgment of history. Branded as treacherous and untrustworthy by Washington’s elite, she turns to Matthew Brady, the pioneering photographer whose images helped shape her husband’s presidency. However, their creative collaboration quickly turns into a power struggle, raising questions about who controls history’s narrative.

With themes of female agency, reputation, and political image-making, Mrs President offers a fresh perspective on one of America’s most misunderstood First Ladies.

A Visually Striking Production

The newly released production images, captured by Pamela Raith, showcase the intensity of the performances and the period-authentic staging. Gregor Donnelly’s set and costume designs, Derek Anderson’s lighting, and Matt Powell’s video design combine to create a visually immersive world that transports audiences to 19th-century America.

Critical Acclaim and Industry Buzz

Described as “evocative” and “unmissable”, Mrs President has already generated significant buzz in London’s theatre scene. The historical and psychological depth of the play, coupled with powerful performances, makes it a standout addition to the season.

Stephen Laing, Head of Collections & Engagement at the British Motor Museum, praised the production, saying:

“This play offers a fascinating and deeply moving look at history, shining a light on a woman whose story has often been overshadowed.”
