A fascinating collection of children’s literature and toys spanning two centuries has gone on display at Leeds’ historic Abbey House Museum, potentially one of its final exhibitions as the institution faces possible closure.
“Story Time” offers visitors a rare glimpse into the evolution of children’s entertainment, featuring precious volumes from the early 1800s including the delightfully titled “The Mice And Their Picnic: A Moral Tale” from 1809. The exhibition traces the development of children’s media from these moralistic Georgian tales through to beloved 20th-century characters like Pinky and Perky and The Wombles.
Of particular interest to collectors and gaming enthusiasts is a selection of items from Leeds’ own Waddingtons, the company behind household favorites Monopoly and Cluedo. The display includes rescued 1960s circular jigsaw artwork that narrowly escaped destruction, saved from a waste bin by a quick-thinking employee.
“Storytelling, play and reading are truly timeless elements of our childhoods which span every generation,” says curator Kitty Ross. “What is fascinating is how our approach to these subjects has changed and evolved over time.” The exhibition demonstrates how children’s entertainment has shifted from purely educational materials to incorporate more playful elements over two centuries.
The timing of this exhibition is particularly poignant as Abbey House Museum, which has stood opposite the historic Kirkstall Abbey for around 100 years, faces an uncertain future. Leeds City Council has proposed closing the museum as part of cost-cutting measures, though final decisions are pending.
For those interested in visiting this unique exhibition and supporting local heritage, the museum remains open to visitors. The collection offers both a window into childhood past and a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural institutions for future generations.
