The beloved children’s book “There’s a Bear on My Chair” is being adapted for the stage, with new rehearsal images revealing the creative process behind bringing Ross Collins’ characters to life. The production, set to premiere at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in February 2025, features innovative puppetry from acclaimed director Toby Olié, known for his work on “Spirited Away” and “War Horse.”
The adaptation will headline the Southbank Centre’s Imagine Festival, the UK’s premier arts festival for children aged 0-11, before moving to Theatre Royal Bath’s The Egg in late February. Behind-the-scenes footage released today showcases the intricate puppetry work and creative development of the production.
“Ross’ books feature a unique combination of humor and nuance that appeals to audiences of all ages,” says Olié, who is both adapting and directing the show. “I am honored to get the chance to bring Ross’ most popular book and its two unlikely rivals to the stage for the very first time.”
The production features an accomplished cast including Olivier Award-winner Fred Davis (“Life of Pi”) and veterans of stage puppetry Ailsa Dalling, Elisa de Grey, and Ben Thompson. The creative team brings together experts in set design, music, lighting, and puppet fabrication to bring the whimsical tale to life.
The stage adaptation coincides with the book’s 10th anniversary, celebrated by publisher Nosy Crow with a special edition featuring a blue and gold foil cover. The original book, which tells the story of a mouse trying to reclaim his favorite chair from a stubborn bear, has sold over 112,000 copies in the UK alone.
Supported by Arts Council England and various charitable trusts, the production promises to capture the playful spirit of Collins’ work while adding “just the right amount of mayhem,” according to Olié. The show will run from February 18-23 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall before transferring to Bath for performances from February 27 to March 2, 2025.
