South London’s theatre scene is witnessing an unprecedented experiment in community-driven performance with the launch of “AiTopia” at the Young Vic. The production, which opened this week, brings together 50 local artists in a bold exploration of artificial intelligence and its impact on human relationships.

Under the direction of Michelle Payne, this ambitious project marks the debut of The Collective, a new theatre company formed through the Young Vic’s Taking Part program. What sets this production apart is its unique development process – the entire show, from script to technical elements, has been created collaboratively by community members from Lambeth and Southwark.

“AiTopia” transports audiences to a speculative future where AI technology offers the promise of digital afterlife in a society that has moved beyond traditional law enforcement. Through the lens of five families, the production examines the complex intersection of grief, technology, and human connection.

The creative process behind “AiTopia” represents a significant shift in how theatre can be produced. Since June 2024, The Collective’s members have been meeting weekly, developing their skills across various theatrical disciplines. The group includes individuals with diverse artistic interests, ranging from performers and writers to lighting designers and production staff.

The production features an eighteen-member cast and has been co-written by eleven community writers. The technical aspects of the show showcase the work of multiple design teams, with seven artists collaborating on set and costume design alone.

This innovative approach to theatre-making is part of the Young Vic’s broader community engagement initiative, which provides creative opportunities to over 15,000 people annually. The production runs until February 1, 2025, with accessibility being a key priority – all performances are relaxed, and a BSL-interpreted show is scheduled for January 31.

“AiTopia” stands as a testament to the potential of community-driven theatre, challenging traditional production models while addressing contemporary concerns about technology’s role in society. The Young Vic Maria Theatre has become not just a performance space, but a laboratory for theatrical innovation and community collaboration.
